Safer Care for CF Patients

Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital is nationally and internationally recognised as a centre of excellence for caring for people with Cystic Fibrosis.
The complicated nature of CF can lead to frequent infections which often results in long stays in hospital as medical teams seek to find the very best ways of fighting the infection using the most potent mixture of antibiotics. Sadly, this is a process that CF patients will have to experience many times and with each occurrence it becomes harder and harder to find viable veins to provide the intravenous (IV) care that they need.
One of the most effective ways of identifying the best sites for IV insertion is using an Ultrasound machine.
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters LHCH Charity was able to purchase two new ultrasound machines for our Cystic Fibrosis team, allowing clinicians to quickly locate viable veins and detect complications early, ensuring patients receive the vital care they need without delay.
Here, Consultant Respiratory and Intensive Care Physician, Dr James Greenwood, tells us more about the machines and the impact they have had for CF patients.
